Māori Navigation

At least 400 years before Captain Cook and his ship the Endeavour first anchored off the coast of New Zealand, Polynesians made the vast journey across the Pacific using very different methods. As the last place to be settled by the voyaging Polynesians, we might expect that for the Māori of New Zealand there would be strongly held traditions recalling the means of their arrival. Unfortunately, there are only scattered references in tribal histories to the navigational techniques of the discoverers and settlers of the southwest Pacific, and they can be difficult to interpret, possibly because the narrative traditions are likely to have changed over time, including their merger into a heroic story of the founding of a nation. It begins with the navigator Kupe, the legendary discoverer of New Zealand, who resided in the central Pacific Ocean.
